The Rainbow Bee-eater, Merops ornatus, is one of Australia’s most colourful birds, found across much of the mainland in open woodlands, grasslands and lightly timbered country, often near water. Its brilliant green, blue and golden plumage is complemented by a black eye stripe, slender curved bill and elongated central tail feathers. Rainbow Bee-eaters catch bees, wasps and other flying insects in swift, graceful flights, returning to a perch to remove stings before feeding. They nest in tunnels excavated into sandy soil, with both parents caring for their young. With its jewel-like colours and aerial agility, the Rainbow Bee-eater brings a vivid sense of movement to the Australian landscape.
