The Red-tailed Black-cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii) is a big, charismatic Australian parrot, easily recognised by its glossy black plumage and the male’s brilliant red tail panels. Their diet is based mainly on seeds from eucalypts, banksias, she-oaks and other native trees, which they expertly tear open with that hefty bill. While the species as a whole is still relatively widespread, some southern subspecies—like the forest and south-eastern Red-tailed Black-cockatoos—are threatened by habitat loss and rely heavily on old, hollow-bearing trees for nesting.
