The Eastern Barn Owl (Tyto javanica) is a small owl with a distinctive heart-shaped white face and long, rounded wings. Widespread across Australia and much of Asia and the Pacific, it favours open country like grasslands, farms and roadside paddocks, where it hunts mainly at night. Using incredibly acute hearing, it locates small mammals such as mice and rats in total darkness, helping to keep rodent numbers in check. It often nests in tree hollows, old sheds or other cavities, where the female lays a small clutch of white eggs while the male brings food to the nest.
